• George ran away to go as a little drummer boy...George took land in Kansas the gov. gave and became a respected farmer (Aunt Lib visited him and wrote about his fine wife and family) – all the children were protestants like the father.36, p 2, lines 51-54

Sir:
I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt from your Office of application for Pension No. 70,526, and to return it herewith, with such information as is furnished by the files of this Office.
It appears from the Rolls on file in this Office, that George O’Brien was enrolled on the 17 day of July, 1861, at Burlington Io. in Co. “I”, 5 Regiment of Iowa Inf. Volunteers, to serve Three years, or during the war, and mustered into service as a Private on the 17 day of July 1861, at Burlington Io., in Co. “I”, 5 Regiment of Iowa Inf. Volunteers, to serve Three years, of during the war. On the Muster Roll of Co. “G” of the 5th Regiment, Iowa Calvary, to which he was transferred for the months of May and June 1865, he is reported Sergeant. Discharged May 25, 1865 on Surgeon’s Certificate of Disability at Jeffersonville, Ind.”2094

Veteran of Civil War and Pioneer
Resident of Kansas
George O’Brien, 89, veteran of the Civil war and pioneer resident of Jefferson county, died at his home in Garfield Place Wednesday afternoon. He had been bedfast for the past three weeks.
Mr. O’Brien was born in Freeport, Ill., October 3, 1840, enlisted in the Civil war when it broke out and served thru out.
When he was discharged, he was a sergeant in Company G, Fifth Iowa cavalry. He came to Kansas in 1870 and married Nellie Slyklous [sic] three years later. They settled on a farm in the Olive Branch neighborhood near Meriden where they resided 45 years.
They moved to Topeka in 1918. Mrs. O’Brien died nine years ago. Mr. O’Brien was a member of the Blue Post No. 250, G.A.R. and was widely known for his jovial disposition and his practical jokes.
He is survived by seven daughters, Mrs. Lottie Becker, Mrs Elizabeth Reed and Mrs. Nellie Wisegarver, Topeka; Mrs. Mary Leekley, San Francisco, Calif.; Mrs. Jennie Bevelle, Ontario, Calif.; Miss Faye and Miss Grace O’Brien, of the home address; and two sons Walter O’Brien, Topeka, and George O’Brien, Jr., Idaho.
Funeral arrangements have not been completed. The body will lie in state at Peebler’s funeral home.2090
