• [excerpts] Gardeners on the Garden Isle of Kauai like to make their headquarters at Eckart Farm & Garden Supplies, just off the main street in Lihue. Here they can be sure of finding the latest garden gadgets, a fine selection of garden products and helpful, trained advice from owner Robert Eckart.
When he’s not busy at his smart, modern shop, Mr. Eckart can be found at his home nursery at Wailua Homestead, where he is becoming famous for his outstanding collection of Florida crotons and Puerto Rican tis.
“Florida has been breeding special crotons for years,” said Mr. Eckart, who journeyed to Florida and Cuba two years ago to import his prized plants. “We could have been doing it, too, we certainly have an even better climate for it. Guess we just never thought of it.”
Besides the usual tropical plants, which he sells locally, and ships to Honolulu and the mainland, Mr. Eckart also markets macadamia nuts from his orchard of 600 trees.
The Eckart's have resided on Kauai since 1935. Mr. Eckart received his degree in agriculture from the University of California.900

• My father enlisted in the army in 1943. He was 35 years old, the "old man". He did return, for which I have been eternally grateful. He was stationed in the South Pacific, participated in the Battle of Leyte Gulf and wound up growing vegetables for the Navy on Saipan...his degree from UC Berkeley, Agriculture. When he returned home he worked as a County Agent for the University of Hawaii Extension Service, quit to open up a farm and garden supply store and wound up raising grapes in Sonoma County, CA. He received no benefits from the U.S. military....his records had burned with many others in a terrible fire. The Veterans of Foreign Wars presented his widow with a flag when he died in 1989.903

• The Eckart Ranch on Kauai was a joint venture with Bob and Tom Eckart buying the property and my father developing it and eventually buying it from Tom. There were 60+ acres in the original parcel and my Dad sold off most of it, whittling it down to 12 acres which he sold in 1956. The Smiths eventually bought one acre where the house site is and have now managed to acquire 3-4 more acres. He is a landscaper of some note on the island and has done a gorgeous job of landscaping the property. The house has also been greatly remodeled They could have torn it down – it was in such bad shape when they bought it – but Rosemary loved it and they retained much of the original walls, floors and floor plan. It’s NICE. [Now Rosewood B&B].904
