• He Died Suddenly at Livermore Yesterday.
Thomas R. Martin, one of the best known locomotive engineers in this city, died suddenly at Livermore last evening.
For many years he resided at 1408 Ninth street. He was for years in the employ of the Railroad Company, in whose service he lost a leg in a collision on the summit of the Sierra Nevadas twenty years ago.
Yesterday morning he was attacked with a fit at Livermore and before nightfall was dead. He served in the army during the last war and was a member of Lyon Post, Grand Army of the Republic. He leaves a widow and several children.1627

Individual Notes
• Crossed the plains to California in 1851.23, p G27

• Emily had a fine mind and was lovely to look at - taught school in Sacramento - was very musical - disappointed her mother when she married a R.R. Engineer. When Mr. Martin asked for her hand Mama said “I didn’t raise my girl to cook and work for any man.” Mr. Martin repeated that in my presence. Emily had a beautiful hand and Mama never asked her to soil it. Emily was a great church goer - very straight laced - but her love of money was her chief fault and her very sarcastic tongue. When visiting her she was the best hostess - always happy.36, p 3; lines 94-102

• When May left him [Mr. Amy] she went to Emily’s in Carson [City?] and Mama always blamed Emily’s envy for most of this trouble. She called him the “the frog-eater, etc.” Envious because May had more than she. Yet May shared with her most generously. Maude’s baby clothes were all convent-made. Emily’s babies were all so dear to May.36, p 5; lines 222-225

• Mrs. Emily Martin, sister of the deceased, told a very damaging tale against Fladung, accusing him of being continually drunk and disgracefully cruel to his wife. time and again, even while his wife was sick in bed, she had seen him strike her in the face and beat her.
Mrs. Martin, when asked about her sister’s life previous to her marriage with Fladung, said she fully supposed she was married to the man she was living with. May had shown her their marriage certificate, and she fully supposed it was genuine. She had heard that her sister had been mixed up in a shooting scrape while living with this man down in Arizona but knew nothing about the facts otherwise.1619

• Named in her mother’s will: ...from this income of said property shall be paid to my daughter Emily A. Martin on the First day of January, of every year, One Hundred ($100) Dollars, until she will have received One thousand Dollars ($1000).521, p 1
