• Stewart Holland Congdon (1112162) wrote me Oct. 21, 1894: “Senator [sic] George Gorham of Washington, D. C., and Charles Gorham, Ex. Gov. [sic] of California are brothers and their mother Martha Congdon was my father’s double cousin, as was also her brother George Congdon who lived and died at New London, Conn.” This establishes them as children of Stephen and Martha (Peckham) Congdon.2375, p 232

• Mattapan’s History
This small neighborhood’ s history is often included as a part of Dorchester’s, since the two were annexed simultaneously [to Boston] in 1870. Like neighboring towns, Mattapan was seen as an attractive place for a country estate by early citizens of Boston. In the 19th century, new transportation turned Mattapan into a “streetcar suburb” and carried businesses and middle-class families to Mattapan. At this time, Mattapan, named for the Mattahunt Indian word for the land, really came into its own.
Located in the south of Boston, Mattapan is bordered by Dorchester, Hyde Park, and Roslindale. It is transected by Blue Hill Avenue, the neighborhood’s main thoroughfare and business district. Mattapan has long been home to an interesting mix of people. Originally a rural retreat for Yankee Bostonians, Mattapan later became home to Irish and Italian immigrants, and after World War I was the center of Jewish life in Boston. Today, Mattapan’s population is largely African-American.2380
