1439, p 58• William Backus III was prominent in the affairs at Windham, the tract of land deeded by Joseph Uncas. William was appointed Sargeant of the Windham Train Band in 1692, men who were trained in military tactics, prepared to defend the town at a moment’s notice. One or another of the Indian tribes was warring against another tribe and as alloes of the Mohegans, they were the target for the wrath of these wars.
