• Little Edward Gallagher, tortured for years with a malignant knee infection, had his leg amputated, raffled off a barrel of oil and bought an artificial one. At 17 he was teaching school in a backwoods district in Alger and wound up with a PhD at Palo Alto [Stanford]. He taught in the San Francisco schools until his retirement. As president of the California Teachers’ Union he was responsible for many of the benefits which have accrued to the teachers of that state. Ed and his wife, Myrtle, were interested in rose culture and had a beautiful garden. Edward was a past president of the San Franciso Rose Society.
