• Alvin Coe Voris was a brevet major general in the Union Army who began the war as a sergeant in the 4th Michigan. Voris was wounded in action at Gettysburg on July 2, 1863. He was brevetted brigadier general of volunteers for war service.3088

• He was a Union officer in Ohio commissioned 2nd Lt. 29th Ohio 2 Oct. 1861, promoted to Lt Col 67th Ohio 11 Oct 1861 and Col 1 Sept. 1865; he was breveted BG USV 8 Dec 1864 and Major Gen. USV 15 Nov 1865.

• A seven page biography appears in “History of Summit Co., OH” by Unigraphic, Inc. (1972), pages 786-793. The same source gives his parents as Peter Voris and Julia Coe, and states he is the eldest of nine brothers and four sisters (all of whom lived to adulthood!). (See also “Gallup’s Family Genealogy, p 121).
Biographical: A newspaper clipping from the Akron Beacon Journal dated 9 Feb 1964 says he was an outstanding civil war hero, wounded in a battle led by Confederate General Stonewall Jackson 22 Mar 1862 at Winchester, VA. It was his first encounter with Confederate forces. During the war, he wrote his wife every day. His wife kept the letters, numbering more than 1000, now in the possession of his granddaughter, Mrs. Allan C. Johnson, of Akron, OH. He was a member of the Ohio State Legislature, 1859-60. He graduated from Oberlin College and became a law partner with Gen. Lucius V. Bierce to whom he was related through his mother’s side of the family.3089
