• Hugh Mosher, Sr. is one of at least three Hugh Moshers to come to America, the others being a son of Thomas settling in Maine, and a son of John that was prominent in the East India Company. This Hugh, also known as Ensign Hugh Mosher, first settled in Salem, Mass. where he became a friend of Roger Williams, pastor of the Salem church. When Williams was banished from Massachusetts in October 1636, Hugh Sr. went with him to Rhode Island. In 1669 he was appointed ensign of a military company and took part in King Philip’s war, during which two of his sons were killed. In 1674 he was ordained pastor of the Baptist church in Dartmouth, Mass., but was always called by his military title, Ensign Hugh Mosher.3356, p 1
