2703, p 72• In the summer of 1948, Mrs. Albert Hunt Chase, of Norwich, came across this item which she very kindly sent to me: Hebron V. 1 - 13: Elizabeth Curtis had a son James, b. 11 Mar. 1732.
7 Feb. 1732-3 Samuel Gilbert, Jr. married this Elizabeth Curtis.
With this possible clue, the Court records were searched with this result: #151 Session of April 1732. Samuel Curtis, of Hebron acknowledged himslef bound in a Recognizance of 20£ money to the Treasurer of the County of Hartford that his daughter Eliza Curtiss shall prosecute her Complaint against James Calkins of Lebanon for begetting her with child in fornication att eh Adjourment of this Court in June next.

#215; Session of November 1732. Elizabeth Curtiss of Hebron single-woman Exhibited an Information to this Court against James Calkins of Lebanon, therein Accusing him the sd Calkins with begetting her with Child on or about the 25th. Day of June Anno 1731 and that he is the Father of the Bastard Child born of her body on the 11th, Day of March 1732 and praying that the said Calkins might be had before this Court to Answer for the same &ca as pr the Information of file Appears, Whereupon the sd. James Calkins was Arrested and Brott before this Court and to the charge in sd Information pleaded not guilty **** the Court is of the opinion that the said James Calkins is not the Father of the sd Elizabeth Curtiss her Bastard Child born as aforesd, and there upon have Considered that the sd James Calkins shall Recover of the Informer the said Elizabeth Curtiss, his Cost Allowed to be 1£ 1s. 8d.
This is most certainly the James Calkins who married Mercy Mann. We have here the right age, the right locality, the proved connection between this child and Samuel Gilbert, Jr.
James Calkins stated that he belonged to the Church of England and a daughter of Samuel Gilbert, Jr married Samuel Peters rector of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church at Hebron.
The James Calkins involved as the alleged father of this boy was James, b. Lebanon 29 Apr. 1702, son of John & Abigail (Birchard) Calkins who 15 Apr. 1734 married Abigail Huntington.
Elizabeth Curtiss was a sister of the Caleb Curtis who married Jemima Calkins, daughter of Samuel & Hannah (Gifford) Calkins.
