Individual Notes
• Was a miner in 1852 Sierra County, CA, and continued in that line of work until his death. Traveled from Illinois with his then wife, Narcissa Gailbreath and her family around 1851 and settled in Placer County, CA. They split soon after as he went to mining and she stayed in Placer County. 1870 census shows him living and working in Grass Valley, CA as mining supervisor. Appears he has recruited two younger brothers from Illinois to work and live with him: William Henry Townsend, b 1840, an engineer, and Samuel F. Townsend, b 1830, a miner.
