• Yes, I agree. Our mothers must have known each other. My parents lived on Lorraine [Lorain] Road in San Marino—I recall my mother telling me and the street name just popped into my head right now. I wonder how close that is to Oak Grove Avenue?
Ted and Sally were born in Pasadena—where the hospital was, yet the family lived in San Marino. My Dad worked for the American Can Company for his entire career in sales, so he must have had an assignment there and then relocated to the SF Bay Area in 1944 or 1945 and worked in SF on Harrison for years.929
• [excerpts] MATTESON, Joy Folger – Passed away at his Sharon Heights home on December 14th after a lengthy illness. He was 88. He lived in the Palo Alto and Menlo Park communities for the last fifty-one years.
A native Californian, born in Stockton, California, Mr. Matteson was an economics graduate of U. C. Berkeley, where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity.
He retired from the American Can Company after a 45 year career in sales, introducing the beer can and the milk carton to the California consumer market.
Memberships included the Menlo Country Club. He was an avid golfer, domino player and world traveler. He believed in the joy of hard work, loving family and friends and taking time to celebrate life and smell the roses.930

• She graduated from UC Berkeley and in 1934, she married Joy Folger Matteson. During the 1950s, she founded and taught The Carlisle School which equipped college graduates with business and administrative skills necessary to compete successfully in the workforce at the time. She moved, with her family, to Sharon Heights in 1969.
She had a passion for travel which was originally fueled by a post graduate trip to the Far East in the 1930s. Golf was also a great passion as she was a member of the Menlo Country Club in Woodside, alongside her husband. She often competed in tournaments.
She is survived by her three children, Edward F. Matteson of Sacramento; Sally Matteson Loudy of Menlo Park; and Rebecca Matteson Nelson of Redwood City; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services have been held. Memorial contributions may be made to the Palo Alto Medical Foundation, 795 El Camino Real.919
• Eleanor "Ellie" Eckart Matteson, who founded and ran the Carlise [sic] School in Palo Alto in the 1950s, died Sept. 2 at home in San Francisco after a long illness. She was 92.
Mrs. Matteson was a third-generation San Franciscan whose father, Nelson "Spider" Andrew Eckhart [sic], was chief engineer for the Hetch Hetchy water system.
She graduated from the Katherine Delmar Burke school and UC Berkeley, then married Joy Folger Matteson in 1934. They lived for many years in Palo Alto, where Mrs. Matteson founded the Carlisle School and taught college graduates secretarial skills.
Mrs. Matteson was a member of the Menlo Country Club and an avid golfer. She also enjoyed traveling.
Mrs. Matteson was preceded in death by her husband in 1997. She is survived by her son, Edward F. Matteson of Sacramento; two daughters, Sally Matteson Loudy of Menlo Park and Rebecca Matteson Nelson of Redwood City; five grandchildren; and three great-granddaughters.
