Know all Men by these presents: that whereas, on the twenty-fourth day of July A.D. 1861, Joseph P. Pownall, Administrator of the Estate of Sanford Williams, deceased, filed his Petition in the Probate Court within and for the County of Portage and State of Ohio, Miron Williams, Adeline Axtell, wife of Samuel Axtell, Emeline Williams, Olive A. W. Maxon, wife of Daniel H. Maxon, Mary M. Wright, wife of Almon Wright, and Juliette Lipscomb, wife of Nelson Lipscomb, heirs at law of said decedent for Authority to make a Deed to Thomas Schultz, on behalf of the heirs at law of said decedent, for the following described real estate situate in the County of Portage and State of Ohio, to wit: Eighty acres of land situate in lot number eighty-seven, on the Northwest quarter of Deerfield Township, County and State aforesaid, and is bounded as follows: beginning at the North East corner of said Lot Eighty-seven thence South to the South to the South East corner of said lot, thence West along the South line of said lot, so far that a line running parallel with the East line of said lot will contain Eighty acres, thence North to the North line of said lot, thence East to the place of beginning, in compliance with the terms of a contract entered into on the Fifth day of October A.D. 1855, between the said Sanford Williams, then in full life, and said Thomas Schultz, and whereas such proceedings were had, that the said Joseph P. Pownall, was ordered by said Court, as administrator as aforesaid, and for and on behalf of the heirs of said decedent, to Execute and deliver to the said Thomas Schultz, a deed in fee simple for the premises, and the said Thomas Schultz, having paid the full Consideration Expressed in said Contract for said premises; now therefore I, the said Joseph P. Pownall, as administrator of the Estate of the said Sanford Williams deceased, and for and on behalf of the heirs at law of said Decedent, do hereby give grant, bargain, sell and convey unto the said Thomas Schultz the premises herein before described with all and singular the appurtenances, To Have and to hold the same unto him the said Thomas Schultz, and unto his heirs, and assigns forever.

Dear Sir –
Your letter in relation to some money now in your hands as Administrator of Sanford Williams Estate, due to his daughter Adaline, now my wife, has been duly received by us. We desire this money to be paid to my wife’s sister, Emeline Williams. We have this day executed jointly a receipt and sent it to her, to be presented to you, or rather an order and receipt combined. She will be able to prove our signatures and I write you this that by comparison of writings, post marks, etc., the judge of the Probate Court may be satisfied of the integrity of the transaction. Should any question be raised however I will send sister Emeline a power of attorney. It is my wish as well as my wife’s that she should draw this money.
As to stamps etc, I secretly [?] know what to do, but will affix an Internal Revenue Stamp to the order. Should anything further be necessary, please write me in full.
If not too much trouble, I wish you would, on receipt of this, write to Emeline Williams at Akron and inform her whether she can draw the money on this order and where to meet you as it might save her the expense of a journey to see you.

My Good Young Lady:
I regret to say that with all its pretensions to commercial, financial and industrial enterprise and such, Summit County is without an organized historical society, nor can even the “tip-top” city of Akron boast of such an institution. Hence your letter addressed to the secretary of said suppositious society has been sent to me, probably because of my modest pretenses to local historical lore. I fear, however, that I can throw but little light on the decidedly shadowy subject you are investigating, though familiar with the locality and many members of the families involved for the past 64 years. Mr. Hiram J. Spicer, youngest son of Major Miner Spicer, born here in 1816, is still living on a portion of the land purchased by his father for himself and others in 1810. Mr. Spicer says that the entire party who, with his father, settled on these lands in 1811, including Paul Williams, were from Groton, New London Co., Conn. But he does not know anything of the Williams ancestry, or the maiden name of Mrs. Paul Williams. Possibly the Town records of Groton could shed some light upon the subject.
Paul Williams, himself, died sometime before I came to Akron, 64 years ago. At that time his widow (second wife, I think) was living in the old homestead (still standing) and with her living a pair of twin granddaughters who had been orphaned by the early death of both of their parents. Their names were Adaline and Emeline Williams. The former married Samuel B. Axtell, of Richfield, in this county. A son, in Richfield, and a daughter, in New Jersey, survived them. Emeline Williams, never married, and is still living with her niece, I think, in Rahway, N.J.
A daughter of Paul Williams became the wife of Mr. George Babcock, and succeeded to the homestead, on the death of the mother. A son of the Babcocks, Williams P. Babcock, now 64 years of age, is still living here. I have interviewed him, but he can give me no information that will be of any practical worth to you in your research. He thinks there is a family record in existence, possibly in possession of a sister-in-law in a neighboring town which he will try and hunt up. If he finds anything of value to you I will advise you later. Mr. Babcock thinks that his cousin, Emeline Williams, knows more about the early history of the family than any other person now living. Her P. O. address, Mr. Babcock thinks, is 127 Church St, Rahway, N.J.
There are other descendants of Paul Williams still living here, among whom a great granddaughter, Mrs. Judge A. C. Voris of 243 Fir St., may possibly have given the subject you are investigating some attention in quest of (discovering ?) antecedents in her own behalf. Possibly a line to her may prove beneficial to you. Regretting my inability to serve you better, and believing that you will the more fully appreciate the little I have attempted to do when I inform you that I am now in my 85th year, and so nearly blind as to be unable to read this letter after I get it completed, I am

“I stopped at Deerfield, Ohio, to see if I could locate any burial sites for the family. On the road to Deerfield my eye caught a sign for Williams Road. And shortly thereafter came to a small cemetery where I stopped. I walked directly to the grave of Sanford Williams. But, I was disappointed to discover no other markers for known family members. The cemetery is the Robinson Cemetery in Palmyra Twp.1121, p 2
