• [excerpts] Ira Mann Calkins died at his home near the stone quarry two miles south of this village, Saturday evening, Feb. 21st, 1885. Mr. Calkins was born in the town of Painted Post, now Corning, Feb. 1st, 1804, and was the last member of the family of Frederick and Polly Calkins.
At an early age he came to this village and clerked for a short time in the store of the late Reuben Robie. In 1881 he married Harriet, fourth daughter of of the late Col. John Whiting, of Bath, and for two years they resided in Pulteney, then removed to this town and have lived at or near their present residence since. He was an influential member of the Methodist church and for many years served on the official board until [……] by old age. Mr. Calkins was a man of remarkable vigor, and few persons have done more hard work than he.
Mr. Calkins was the father of twelve children, ten of who reached maturity.
Mrs. Calkins, who survives her husband, is in her 75th year.
2702, p 2• [excerpts] During the year 1834, he became the subject of a deep conviction of sin and was converted at a meeting held in the barn of Moses Dadfey, about midway between Bath and Bonny Hill. He united at once with a Methodist class, came in due time into full membership, and has remained through more than fifty years a faithful and acceptable member, serving in all the grades of office to which our laity are eligible. A little more than three years ago he became blind, but nonetheless continued his attendance upon the worship of the sanctuary and the social means of grace. His last sickness was of seven weeks’ duration, through which without much severe suffering he sank away in a gradual failing of all his physical energies. He was sustained by Christian hope and rests in peace. His wife, with seven of their twelve children, twenty grandchildren, and three of the fourth generation survive. Our church in Bath is bereaved with them in this removal of an honored veteran.
