Perhaps his most important contribution to chemistry in general and to ACS in particular was his founding of Project SEED in 1968. This program has, for the past 34 years, offered economically disadvantaged students the opportunity to work in chemistry settings. The program now also includes college scholarships.
Nixon spent 33 years with Shell Development as a research chemist and a research supervisor, working on the behavior and properties of motor and aviation fuels and the production and treatment of refinery product streams, among other projects.

He is survived by his wife, Dr. Louise (Hewlett) Nixon; daughter Sandra and nephew Howard. He was predeceased by his first wife Gwen and daughter Shelia. Born in Saskatoon, Alan attended King George School and the Saskatoon Collegiate (Nutana) and received his B.A. and M.S. from the U of S.

Louise attended Miss Burke’s and was graduated from Stanford, where she was a Delta Gamma. Her brother is Capt. William Redington Hewlett, U. S. A., now stationed in Arlington, Va. His spouse is the former Flora Larson of Berkeley.
