• IGI shows a Daniel Walter christened 1794 in Lutheran and Reformed Church Arendtsville, Adams county, Pennsylvania. His parents are Mathias and Anna Maria. Between 1794 and 1810 they also have Johannes, Elizabeth, Jacob, and Solomon recorded in the same church. In same IGI is also recorded Mathias Walter, baptized 1804 in same church, parents given as Mathias Walter and mother's maiden as KNAUS.

2263• Just have not been able to let Daniel Walter(s) rest. Going through all my Walters files, I was astounded to find that in [a] deed to Mathias Walter (Elk Run Township) February 1825, which I had obtained almost 20 years ago...one of the adjoining land owners cited in the description was DANIEL WALTER -– also DANIEL WALTER was a witness to the deed FEBRUARY 26, 1825.
So this morning (April 6, 1993) scurried back to the Library and vowed I’d check the 1820 census microfilm for EVERY household in ELK RUN TOWNSHIP until I found Daniel, and NOT rely on the published 1820 OHIO CENSUS INDEX. Mentioned to my friend Carol W. Bell that I was certain Daniel HAD TO BE IN COLUMBIANA COUNTY until after 1825. She had personally read ORIGINAL 1820 CENSUS records and published a book of COLUMBIANA COUNTY only. So I did not have to go through Elk Run Township, because in 1820 DANIEL lived in WEST TOWNSHIP, COLUMBIANA COUNTY.
With today’s data, you will have documentation that in:
1816 DANIEL voted in Elk Run Township
1820 DANIEL lived in West Township
1825 DANIEL witnessed a deed in Elk Run Township and was listed as owner of adjoining land.
The next step was to recheck the published 1820 Ohio census index...and only DANIEL WALTER shown was the one in Ross County...YOUR DANIEL in West Township..was misread and indexed as DANIEL WA
TTERS.
2264• Though Daniel Walter does not appear in Wayne county in 1820 [subsequently shown to be not the case; see above], I find it interesting that a Christian Walters appears in BAUGHMAN TOWNSHIP, WAYNE COUNTY, 1820 as family 19, with the location of the homestead shown as 19 on the attached map. This Christian may be the clue as to WHY Daniel ended up in Baughman Township. I wonder what the relationship of this Christian might be to Daniel.
Also enclosing copies of the Early Land Records of Wayne County, Ohio showing Christian Walters to be the owner of 160 acres on the 1814-1819 tax list; 160 acres on the 1820 tax list, but on the 1828 list he has the 160 plus and additional 80 acres.
2265, p 2• The index records a 1828 deed transfer from Daniel Walter to David Metsker and refers to volume 7, page 435 for additional details. The index further records that the property is on Range 11, Township 17, Section 14, SE (corner). Your maps of Baughman Twp (1820 Census) indicate that Daniel’s property was at “family order #16.” He was not there in the 1820 Census (who was there?). Daniel’s 160 acres were just two miles east of Christian Walters at #19. Christian had been on the tax lists since 1814 - 1819.
Daniel Walter does not appear in the deed index again. Christian never appears. It suggests that Christian stayed and flourished while Daniel fell on hard times; he remained propertyless in Baughman Twp in the 1830 Census.
2266, p 1 Whether or not Daniel and his family were ever in Green County, he was in Baughman without property in 1830 and we found him in Salt Creek Twp in 1840 in the same condition. And three daughters were gone. The Census location suggests he was sandwich between Hatfields; Robert, Sarah and Adam were each enumerated as heads of households. It suggests that Daniel and his family were living (and working) on Hatfield property.
The record shows that Daniel’s father Matthias died with Daniel’s unpaid note for $100 dated November 24, 1847. Perhaps this marks Daniel’s moving on to Iowa.
2266, p 2• Listed as a debtor in the amount of $100 to the Estate of Matthias Walter:
Daniel Walter Note November 24/47 $100.00 “Doubtful”
2267, p 2• During the next [1851] year, Daniel Walters effected settlement [in Lafayette Township].
1862 - Trustee
1865 - Trustee
2268• Buried in Andrews Cemetery, Waverly, Lafayette township, Bremer county, Iowa. Date of death given as 28 Mar 1874.
Date of birth given as 3 Feb 1794; identical with date of birth of son of Matthias Walter, from baptismal records of Lutheran and Reformed Church of Arendtsville, Adams county, Pennsylvania.
This is the key link proving Daniel of Iowa is the son of Mathias John Walter of Adams County, Pennsylvania and Columbiana county, Ohio.
1931, p 2• See Walter Family Documentation for proof that Matthias John Walter is father of Daniel.

Individual Notes
• You already know that Daniel Walter married Mary A. Mayer in 1816. What I find most interesting about that marriage is that NO MAYER families appear in Columbiana County until much later in 1800’s. Raises the question as to whether Mary A. Mayer was related to someone in Elk Run Township, with whom she resided, or if she worked for someone in that area when she met Daniel! The director of our local genealogy department, is a certified genealogist, who has published many books on Columbiana County genealogy, and I asked her about the Mayer surname and she said it is NOT a common Columbiana County name, but that it is sometimes spelled Myers and Myres and Meyers, which are the more common spelling.
2265, p 1• Surname given as MYER on Death Certificate of her daughter, Lydia.
2275• Name given as Mary Ann Myer(s).
2276• If Mary named her eldest son after her father, perhaps the father’s name was Frederick.
2266, p 2• My friend, Carol Bell, has been doing some Elk Run Township research recently. I discussed your Mary A. Mayer problem with her. From her personal files, she came up with some interesting data that she gave to me to pass on to you as a gift.
She feels that the father of Mary A. Mayer is the Frederick Myers shown in School District #3 of Elk Run Township as of 1828. She said to tell you that she cannot prove that but as further evidence, she pulled the 1820 Census for Elk Run Township, page 58A, which shows:
Frederick Myers 1 male 26-45 (born ca 1775-94)
1 female 26-45 (born ca 1775-94)
We cannot find Frederick Myers in Columbiana County in 1830.
2277, p 1• Her name is given with the middle initial “A.”
